"Mega-D" Botnet Defeated, Quarter-Million Drone PCs Offline

FireEye security company researcher Atif Mushtaq chalked up a major win for web security last week with an historic defeat of the Mega-D botnet. Hackers rely on remote access to networks of infected computers to distribute malware email attachments and launch server attacks. This network of infected computers was consistently among the top 10 of such networks with an estimated 11% of spam messages originating from its 250,000 computers. Years of study, followed by a coordinated effort with internet service providers allowed Atif and a two FireEye colleagues to free the enslaved PCs and defeat the botnet for good.
