Two companies with nearly universal brand recognition have been swapping paint for third position in the browser war for years, and the growth of Android has spilled the battle into the mobile arena. With phones such as the Droid and the new Nexus One aimed directly at ending the iPhone's dominance, it's no surprise that tempers have flared between the tech rivals. What does Apple CEO Steve Jobs think Google's 'don't be evil' corporate manta? "It's bullshit," he was quoted saying during the town hall-style debriefing following the iPad unveiling. Google CEO Steve Ballmer also waxed snarky with little hesitation in response to Apple's new product, asking a reporter to remind him of: "the difference between a large phone and a tablet."
The one-upsmanship doesn't end in the PR category, either. The recent release of a Bing! iPhone app has led closed-door conferences about Apple replacing Google as its default mobile search provider. Google has also released a HTML5-enabled mobile app version of its Google Voice service, completely bypassing Apple's App store approval dithering using their own Safari browser. Regardless of the side you choose, this sort of competition is good for the consumer. Google and Apple are locked in a contest to exceed each other's (and our) expectations and impressive innovation has been the major result thus far.

In response to the recent posturing between the Chinese government and global search conglomerate Google, a Chinese university student has launched search engine Goojje.com. The name is a homophone with the Chinese for "little sister" and the site's original welcome message asked for amnesty for its "brother" (roughly pronounced 'google' in Chinese) in its ongoing dispute. With Google's departure looking more certain, the site has shifted its message to welcoming refugee searches and encouraging community development. Unfortunately for China, the site is little more than a clever mimic, and Goojje's adherence to strict censorship standards makes it a poor doppelganger, indeed.

The Kaiser Family Foundation, a healthcare-centric NGO, recently completed a study focusing on the media use of American youths, and the results may surprise you. The 10 year, three-phase survey found that on average, 8-18 year-olds devote almost 8 hours of the typical day to television, texting or the internet. Inclusion of the "multi-tasking" wild card pushes this daily average up to a whopping 10 hours of media exposure! How do they do it?
Ignoring the mildly interesting socioeconomic indicators included this report makes the potential impact of its findings all the more clear. To sum it up in two words or less: Captive Audience.
