"Mega-D" Botnet Defeated, Quarter-Million Drone PCs Offline

FireEye security company researcher Atif Mushtaq chalked up a major win for web security last week with an historic defeat of the Mega-D botnet. Hackers rely on remote access to networks of infected computers to distribute malware email attachments and launch server attacks. This network of infected computers was consistently among the top 10 of such networks with an estimated 11% of spam messages originating from its 250,000 computers. Years of study, followed by a coordinated effort with internet service providers allowed Atif and a two FireEye colleagues to free the enslaved PCs and defeat the botnet for good.

Student Experts brings you this good news along with some more: Experts are available right this minute to advise your next security upgrade for your home computer. Caution will only take you so far, and the widespread nature of such attacks makes it essential to take precautions and protect your data. Online fraud is so profitable because users are easily manipulated into giving up their personal information, so be careful what you click on, lest you become part of Mega-E!

    John Mayer's 4-Step Twitter Rehab

In what can only be described as hypo-twitical, John Mayer is campaigning for a weeklong "digital cleanse" following the first of the new year. The pop singer has outlined a 4-point plan on his blog which advocates a avoiding text messages and social networking sites, accessing email only from laptop or desktop computers (?) and a ban on celebrity gossip sites altogether. This sudden luddite turn sounds more than a little disingenuous coming from the holder of the #6 twitter account at just shy of 3 million followers. Would you dare deprive your loyal stalkers and A.D.D. fanclub of mundane details about you every bowel movement, John? I'll believe it when I see it.

Student Experts will not be taking a hiatus from the use of technology following the new year, in fact we intend to do the very opposite. SE will be hitting the ground running and will be available for IT consulting over email, social networking, and the telephone. Consult us for your next upgrade, data migration or network security need and we promise not to tell John Mayer you've been cheating.
